From April 26th to May 3rd, Christies has been holding an auction featuring works of art by Andy Warhol during the Studio 54 era to benefit the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

The Christies auction features images of many famous entertainers and rock stars - including Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Debbie Harry, and Boy George - but one of the most amazing items in the auction is this gelatin silver print from 1981:

The Christies description says the 8" x 10" photo is expected to sell for over $15,000 although it's still at a starting bid of $12,000. Of particular note is this excerpt from Warhol's book Exposures:

Specialist's Notes

“Susan [Blond] got me an interview with Michael Jackson, one of the Jackson Five and the star of The Wiz. I asked him for a date. He said, ‘Are you a fairy or something?’ He was going with Tatum O’Neal then. I wanted to go on a date with both of them.” (A. Warhol, Exposures, London, 1979, p. 200)

What an amazing moment in music and art history. The king of pop art asked out the king of pop music.

Warhol also did the well known cover of Time Magazine that showcased Jackson at the height of his powers in 1984:
