Billie Joe Armstrong, best known as the singer, songwriter, and guitar player of the pop punk band Green Day, has embarked on a project that will surprise many this year. Armstrong decided that he wanted to make an album of Everly Brothers songs, and reached out to the immensely talented and beautiful Norah Jones to collaborate with him. The result is the album Foreverly, which is set for official release on November 25th.
The two sat down at GRAN/ELÉCTRICA in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn, NY to discuss how Foreverly came together and their thoughts about making the record. Interspersed in the interview are clips from the songs "Long Time Gone," "Roving Gambler," "Oh So Many Years," "Put My Shoes Away," and "Silver Hair Daddy of Mine."
Among the interesting tidbits of information we learn are that Armstrong and Jones chose not to listen to other arrangements of the classic Everly Brothers songs, and focused on the original versions instead. The two felt a connection with each other because both of their moms are from Oklahoma. Billie Joe mentions at one point that he wanted to make the record because there's so much new technology in modern life that he wanted to do something that was more of a "family heirloom."
