Barry White has been reborn in animation form by PBS Digital Studios for this episode of “Blank on Blank.” The video includes an audio excerpt from an April 2nd, 1987 interview the late, great singer had with Joe Smith. White touches on his Los Angeles upbringing, music business origins, and his passion for love in the video.

"I didn’t mind working in the clubs, but I resented it being a club where pimps hang out because the music that I create is of a higher intellect than that. It not only encompasses pimps, but whores, ballplayers, executives...everybody," he states in the beginning. The animated characters and effects bring the old interview to new life, as Barry's words are transformed into to art on the screen. "I came into it knowing what I had to offer, all I had was the will and the love for music. I couldn’t read music or write it," he reveals in the interview.

The main focal point of the segment is White's point of view on love. Known for his deep voice and seductive songs, White tells Joe that love is the most important thing in the world.

"Fleas fuck. Flies, snakes, everybody’s into love-making, Joe. Besides that, it’s the most powerful element that men and women possess. Most of us don’t know what...how to use it, but we all possess it. The women used the music to get their men to relate to them better: 'talk to me, tell me what’s on your mind.' Men used the music to get the girls in the mood to make love. So either way you had it, Barry White is the one artist who actually was in your bedroom with you at your most sacred, sensuous moment of your life."

The full audio interview from April 2, 1987, is available on the Library of Congress website.
