On Friday night, progressive jamband TAUK melted faces as they began a two night run at Brooklyn Bowl in New York in celebration of their recently released album, Sir Nebula. The concert was also part of the inaugural music festival Mondo.NYC that was taking place at various venues around the area. Below, you can stream an audience recording of the complete show from taper Matt Moricle.

When I arrived at the venue, Boston outfit Lespecial were warming up the excited crowd with a style of music that can be described as "earthy." Heavy percussion, flowing guitar riffs, and intricate sound effects all played a role in keeping the crowd feeling relaxed and jovial.

When TAUK hit the stage at around 11 PM, their fans (known as sTAUKers), had filled the room and were ready to dance. Opening up with "Friction" from their 2013 album Collisions, the familiar track got the crowd grooving instantaneously. We then got a taste of their new material with "Informant" and "Flashback," and they both gelled comfortably together.

As the night continued on, there was a positive aura floating through the crowd which I'm sure the band felt. Each song held its own adventure of spacey guitar riffs from Matt Jalbert and timely placed keyboard and organ fills from Alric “A.C.” Carter. Bassist Charlie Dolan and drummer Isaac Teel provided a solid rhythm section that was exciting and tight.

The crowd was pleasantly surprised when TAUK followed the Sir Nebula song "Sunshine Harry" into a fun take of the Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory song "Oompa Loompa," an obvious nod to the recently passed Gene Wilder. Later in the set, the band also busted out a jam heavy cover of the Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" that was colored by Carter's keyboards and flurry of prog rock guitar.

TAUK treated the loyal fans to a three song encore that included a psych-jazzy version of the Homunculus song "The Spot," a 15+ minute version of "Mindshift" that incorporated Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place," and "The Chemist."

The night was an overall success for the fans and band alike. We got to hear the new songs come alive, and TAUK clearly enjoyed playing them for us. If you like your music on the experimental side with heavy jams and deep grooves, then get yourself to one of their concerts.

Sir Nebula is currently available on Amazon. You can also stream the full album and read our review here on Zumic.
