The holiday season is always one of Broadway’s busiest – not only do theater fans give each other tickets to shows as gifts, but the thousands of tourists who come to Manhattan during the holidays often put a Broadway show as one of the top things on their New York City to-do list.
Those coming to New York City with their families have to choose the right musical for their families – while shows like The Book of Mormon and Jersey Boys are acclaimed, they’re not appropriate for younger or more sensitive theatergoers. Furthermore, Disney musicals like Aladdin and The Lion King are great for all audiences, but tickets are expensive and often hard to come by, especially if you’re buying tickets for a big family.

Fiddler on the Roof
This production of Fiddler on the Roof at the Broadway Theatre is the sixth in Broadway history — in fact, there has been one on Broadway in parts of every decade since the first production opened in 1964 and ran for nearly eight years. One of the reasons why Fiddler on the Roof has remained so popular is because of the memorable Tony Award-winning songs written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, including “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “If I Were a Rich Man.” The current production, directed by Broadway veteran Bartlett Sher, closes on December 31, so this holiday season is the last chance to see Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway… until another production opens sometime in the next decade!

Matilda — The Musical
One of the great joys for children who attend Broadway shows is seeing other children performing, which is one of the reasons why shows like Annie became huge hits. Matilda the Musical, which is based on the popular Roald Dahl book about an elementary school genius who develops extraordinary powers, has been a popular favorite for audiences of all ages since opening on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre in April 2013 following a successful (and ongoing) Royal Shakespeare Company production in London. Like Fiddler on the Roof, Matilda will be closing after the 2016 holiday season, so New Year’s Day will be your last opportunity to see Matilda on Broadway.

School of Rock – The Musical
Speaking of young talent on Broadway, another show that has been a huge hit with audiences of all ages is School of Rock – The Musical. Though it is based on the popular 2003 film that starred Jack Black, the musical features songs written by musical theater icon Andrew Lloyd Webber. Since opening last December at the Winter Garden Theatre, School of Rock has been a big hit with critics and audiences, so if you don’t get to see it this holiday season, you can likely still catch it throughout next year instead.
