Full casting has been announced for the upcoming Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George. The revival, which launched as a New York City Center Gala production in October of 2016, will play a ten-weeks-only engagement at the Hudson Theatre ending on April 23. Previews began on February 11, and opening night will be February 23.

The cast is a truly special one, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford set to reprise their leading roles from the City Center production as George and his neglected lover, Dot.

Gyllenhaal is of course best known as an A-list film actor. In his career, he has performed in only one Broadway play, Constellations in 2015, and made his City Center debut in Little Shop of Horrors later that year to great acclaim. In a twist of fate, he was supposed to star in a revival of Lanford Wilson’s Burn This before it was postponed. That production was slated to reopen the Hudson Theatre this month, but Sunday in the Park with George took its place.

Ashford is an A-list actress in her own right. She won a Tony Award for the revival of You Can’t Take it With You, and was Tony-nominated for the role of Lauren in the original Broadway cast of Kinky Boots. She also starred in the recent Broadway revival of Sylvia (playing the eponymous dog), and has played a regular role in the Showtime series Masters of Sex since 2013.

Most of the impressive core cast from the 2016 City Center production will be joining Gyllenhaal and Ashford. That includes Ruthie Ann Miles, who won a Tony in 2015 (The King and I), plus Tony-nominees Brooks Ashmanskas (Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me), Phillip Boykin (Porgy and Bess), and Michael McElroy (Big River), as well as Claybourne Elder, Liz McCartney, Jordan Gelber, and Max Chernin.

A notable new addition to the cast is Robert Sean Leonard, who won a Tony for The Invention of Love and is best known for his role as Dr. Wilson in the TV series House, as well as the film Dead Poets Society.

It is only fitting that this production will reopen the historic Hudson Theatre, which hosted top line shows from 1903 to 1968 as one of the first theatres in the Broadway district. The New York Times has done several features on the theatre recently, explaining, "The ornate theater has led a life as various as Manhattan itself, with stints as a TV studio (1950s), a reborn legit theater and then a porn palace (’60s), a rock venue (’80s), and, for the last 20 years, an event space for Millennium Hotels." The theatre was recently given a $10 million renovation, reclaiming its place as one of the finest in the world.

Written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Sunday in the Park with George won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1985. The story follows French painter Georges Seurat and his obsessive, meticulous quest to complete his masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, even as he alienates the people around him.

Sunday in the Park with George has a strict end date of April 23, due to the actors' other commitments. Don’t miss out on your chance to catch this all-star revival of a musical masterpiece. Tickets for Sunday in the Park with George are still available through Telecharge, starting at just $49.
