Tennis is a husband and wife duo who rose to prominence during the chillwave craze of 2010. Like many of their contemporaries, the band had to make a change after people got tired of lo-fi filters on every new indie band's songs. On "Mean Streets," Tennis still sounds as retro and poppy as ever, but the production is crisp and there's been an upgrade in Alaina Moore's singing. They may not have drastically changed their formula (looking at you, Neon Indian), but by digging deeper into their influences and stepping up their songwriting game, Tennis has matured with more grace than the majority of first generation chillwavers.
"Mean Streets" will be featured on Tennis' upcoming Small Sound EP, which you can preorder now on iTunes.
