Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Killers shared the creative process and music video for their newest Christmas song, "Joel the Lump of Coal." Watch it above.
Every December since 2006, The Killers have released a new holiday track. Some of the money generated from the music's sales goes towards Bono's (RED) campaign which seeks to help alleviate the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa. In the past, the band have written their annual song with artists such as Elton John, Dawes, and Neil Tennant. This year, they collaborated with Jimmy Kimmel.
The first half of the clip consists of Kimmel going through the writing process with The Killers. The host starts to throw around concepts that the band doesn't seem too thrilled about, from "A Very YOLO Christmas" to ripping off Taylor Swift. Finally, they settle on having a song focused around a character similar to Frosty the Snowman or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
The music video for "Joel the Lump of Coal" then begins. It features The Killers playing in the North Pole and the titular character thinks he will be a gift when he is picked by Santa. As the story continues, Joel is disappointed to find out the use of coal for Christmas, but finds a way to spread happiness. Although it may seem atypical for a Killer's video, it still serves as a wonderful tribute to old holiday claymation specials.
