Last year, folk veteran Kath Bloom recorded a version of Tom Petty's song "Learning To Fly" during her recording sessions for her latest album, Pass Through Here. Last week, she released the audio on her label's SoundCloud. Listen to her take on the Petty classic above.
A thundering rainstorm is heard in the background before the song kicks in, and the sounds of nature through the recording make you feel like you're at a camp fire. As opposed to the original, Kath chooses to slow it down a bit, drawing the listener's attention in. Her vocals are genuine, and her acoustic strumming is hypnotizing. Occasional backing vocals and an electric guitar (possibly pedal steel?) add a soft touch and a warm flavor. Simply put, it's a great version.
Kath Bloom released Pass Through Here last month, and it's currently available on Amazon (Vinyl, CD, MP3).
