Apparently, the Power 106 radio personalities have taken a liking to young Joey Bada$$. The 20 year-old MC and Pro Era boss was a featured guest with the L.A. Leakers as well as The Cruz Show during his visit to Los Angeles earlier this year. He was also given a web-only studio segment in which he breaks down a verse from "Paper Trail$."

Joey Talks Influences with LA Leakers

It's no secret Joey has taken a nostalgic approach with his music. He also talks about growing up in Brooklyn doing music in middle school and high school, and going to school for acting. He gives his mom credit for playing "everything from Betty Wright to Prince to Biggie to Jay... to a whole bunch of '90s reggae like Beanie Man." He talks about getting into underground rap like MF Doom on his road to becoming himself. He also name-checks A Tribe Called Quest. When compared to Nas, Joe responds that when he hears those comparisons he gets inspired.

He also talks about working with the J. Dilla Foundation, which laid the foundation for "Like Me" with BJ The Chicago Kid and Questlove. Joey shares his approach to style, what he likes in certain females, what's going on in the friendly East Coast / West Coast rivalry, traveling, food, acting, a clothing line, the Malia Obama photo, and getting arrested in Australia earlier this year.

Joey Breaks Down "Paper Trail$" for Power 106

Joey appears to be wise beyond his young years as he breaks down the first verse of his song "Paper Trail$." He briefly discusses self-realization, materialism, and the evils of money.

Joey "Breakfast Bars" Freestyle on The Cruz Show

Joey flexes his wits, doing a Breakfast Bars heads-up freestyle. This is a true freestyle, as he goes completely off-the-top while Host J Cruz holds up cards with words for him to use.

Joey Speaks on the success of B4.Da.$$ with The Cruz Show

Joey's debut album B4.Da.$$ debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, outperforming Lupe Fiasco's Tetsuo & Youth, which was released on the same day. It has sold more than 120,000 copies to date, not bad for an independent artist! In an interview with The Cruz Show, he discusses the success of the album. He also dives into the whole madness of Malia Obama posting a picture on Instagram wearing a Pro Era shirt.
