Zumic recently held a contest on ReverbNation where we took submissions from over 3,400 bands and artists to be featured on our site. Our first winner is Alex Hughes, an Australian guitar player currently living in Los Angeles. Listen to his song "Valley of Sean Penn" above, via the ReverbNation player.

"Valley of Sean Penn" is an exploration of sound. It's pretty incredible that one person can do so much with a guitar. As you can see on this YouTube video of the song, Alex does everything you're hearing in one take. No overdubs, no studio trickery, just a man and his instrument.

Alex gets a wide range of sounds with virtuosic flair. Meanwhile, the percussion elements come from Alex thumping the guitar's body with the fingers on his right hand in all kinds of ways. He plays rhythm and lead at the same time, with warm bass notes, crisp melodies, and soaring harmonics. Like all great instrumental music, the overall sound is truly ear pleasing while there's a sense of theatrics that keeps things interesting.
