This weekend, the remaining members of the Grateful Dead wrapped up their three night Chicago run with record breaking numbers and a new batch of memories created. One of the high points of the band's July 4th performance came during the encore, when the Empire State Building's LED lights were synchronized to the band's live performance of "U.S. Blues." After the fact, the band have uploaded a video of the light show with audio taken from the band's 1974 studio album, From the Mars Hotel, featuring Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals.
It's a magnificent light show, to say the least. Empire State Building lighting designer Marc Brickman coordinated the lighting display with the Grateful Dead to feature the band's imagery and assorted colors on the building's needle during the song's performance.
This isn't the first time the ESB has been lit up in celebration of the band. In 2009, The iconic building was lit up in tye-dye colors for an exhibition from the Grateful Dead at the New York Historical Society.
