Today, Gregg Allman has released a two CD live album titled Gregg Allman Live: Back To Macon, GA that was recorded on January 14th, 2014 at the majestic Grand Opera House. The sixteen songs found on this release feature many Allman Brothers classics such as "Statesboro Blues," "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," and "Whipping Post." There's also tracks like "I'm No Angel" and "Brightest Smile in Town" that Gregg released on solo albums.
The 8-piece band that backed Gregg on this special night included guitarist Scott Sharrard, bassist Ron Johnson, keyboardist Ben Stivers, drummer Steve Potts, percussionist Marc Quinones, saxophonists Jay Collins and Art Edmaiston, and trumpeter Dennis Marion. Gregg Allman's son, Devon Allman, shows up as a special guest.
While many of these songs have endured the test of time to become fan favorites, Gregg Allman and his band manage to put a fresh touch and different interpretations to some of the songs. "Statesboro Blues" has an upbeat jazz / R&B flavor in part of horns and crisp guitar work. Swampy slide guitar from Sharrard combined with Ben Stivers' keys gives the Muddy Waters track "I Can't Be Satisfied" a bluesy feel that you can stomp your feet to.
The 1971 Duane Allman inspired track "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" receives a fresh lift with soulful saxophone and guitar playing that push the song to emotional heights. Gregg pours his heart into his vocals for the Ray Charles' track, "Brightest Smile In Town."
The acoustic styling of "Melissa" feels pleasantly nostalgic, and Gregg's warm voice sounds natural and true while flute and guitar solos hit the spot. "Love Like Kerosene," a track from Sharrard’s album, Scott Sharrard and the Brickyard Band, pushes the band's energy into high gear with a country rock flavored rhythm.
Closing out this fantastic concert experience is a crowd approved "One Way Out" that is full of driving energy and impressive musicianship. Horns, guitar, and percussion highlight the 11+ minute track.
