FKA twigs' follow-up to her genre-defying LP1 is no less bizarre than it's predecessor, in fact it may be even more unusual. On M3LL155X (pronounced "Melissa"), the alt-R&B wunderkind once again fuses experimental electronic blips and hip hop infused drum samples on tracks such as "Figure 8" and the incredible "In Time."
In an interview with Complex UK, twigs shared the inspiration for the album title:
The EP is called Melissa, and ‘Melissa’ to me is my personal female energy. I’ve never called it ‘Melissa’ before the EP. It’s not a weird alter ego. It’s just my way of separating it from myself.
All of the tracks on this EP are spectacularly produced and realized. FKA twigs released a surreal video "figure 8," "i'm your doll," "in time," and "glass & patron." You can view that video above. The full EP, which you can stream below via Spotify, also includes "mothercreep."
Although this might not be the most radio-friendly EP in terms of appeal, FKA twigs' M3LL155x proves that she has a truly unique sound and knack for songwriting. It's also important to note that the EP was produced by BOOTS, who has co-writing credit on all the songs. Other artists involved in the production were Tic and Cy An.
M3LL155X is available on Amazon (MP3).
