The Arcs, fronted by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, have released the socially conscious track "Lake Superior" on their SoundCloud page. Listen above.
The song was inspired by Making a Murderer, a Netflix original docu-series about a Wisconsin man named Steven Avery. Avery was wrongly convicted of sexual assault in 1985. After 18 years, he was found not guilty and released due to DNA evidence coming to light. However, in 2007 he was convicted for murdering another woman, a crime for which he is still in jail despite serious doubts surrounding the case.
Similar to this series, "Lake Superior" is raw and exposes the truth through blunt lyrics. Auerbach's voice is muffled, but very emotional. The Arcs made a statement on their SoundCloud page:
It's like Billy Childish says, 'We live in troubled times'. Last week, we got a sneak peek at what goes on behind the curtains of our criminal justice system. A few sleepless nights later we gathered in the studio and wrote this song. Written, recorded, mixed and mastered in 2 days.
All proceeds from this song will be donated to the Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing wrongful convictions through DNA testing.
There are also petitions for President Barrack Obama to pardon Steven Avery on change.org (currently over 340,000 signatures) and whitehouse.gov (currently over 120,000 signatures).
