The music world was shocked yesterday when news broke about David Bowie's passing, and various tribute recordings have been released in honor of the late great singer-songwriter. Among them is this video from Athens, Georgia jamband Widespread Panic, who played a cover of Bowie's 1977 song "Heroes" during their 2015-2016 New Years Eve run at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Watch it above, via the band's YouTube.

Widespread Panic's take on the Heroes title track captures the band's unique Southern rock style, and gets livened up with the addition of horns. John Bell's passionate vocals sound like a natural fit for Bowie's emotional tune, while organ playing give it a warm vibe. Jimmy Herring's guitar lends a boost of rock and roll flavor.

According to the authoritative Widespread Panic setlist website, Everyday Companion, this concert marked the first time the band performed Bowie's “Heroes” in public. They did it in tandem with their own song called "Heroes" that appeared on their Ain't Life Grand album in 1994.

On this same night, the band also performed a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." The full official soundboard recording of the concert is available exclusively through livewidespreadpanic.com.

Widespread Panic will be performing a four-day festival in Mexico in the beginning of February, followed by a North American tour this year.
