Brian Fallon, the New Jersey singer-songwriter best known as the Gaslight Anthem frontman, has released his debut solo album, Painkillers. Listen to the full album above on Spotify, containing 12 songs and running for 40 minutes.

On July 29, 2015, The Gaslight Anthem announced they were taking a break and stated members would be working on their own projects. Brian spoke with The Star-Ledger about his intentions for Painkillers:

I wrote this record imagining not a soul would hear it... This reminded of the fact that you make records for yourself and you hope people like them — that's what you did in the beginning. And I was thinking 'what did I first find in music that got me into wanting to do this in the first place?' I pulled things that are 20 years old for this.

The album begins with the spirited anthem for living with a purpose, "A Wonderful Life." Following is the addicting title track, "Painkillers," that features a catchy hook and soothing harmonies. "Among Foolish things" comes after and is just as captivating with a stimulating chorus and electrifying guitar riffs.

Things pick up with the hasty, drum heavy "Rosemary." The second to last track, "Mojo Hand" is a lively tune with foot tapping beats and whimsical lyrics. The soulful, bittersweet song, "Open All Night," wraps up the album on a sincere note.

Although his musical career will always be tied to The Gaslight Anthem, who he led for over 9 years, Brian was able to define himself as a solo artist with excellent songwriting skills and vocals on Painkillers. The sound here continues Fallon's progression toward rootsy folk rock, moving away from the aggressive punk approach of early The Gaslight Anthem.

The album was recorded in Nashville with Butch Walker handling production, and also contributing as a musician on guitar, backing vocals, and piano. The other musicians on the album include The Gaslight Anthem's Alex Rosamilia on piano, Mark Stepro on drums and backing vocals, Catherine Popper on bass guitar and backing vocals, Todd Stopera on guitar, and Ian Perkins on guitar.

Songs we recommend are "A Wonderful Life," "Painkillers," "Among Foolish things," "Smoke," "Steve McQueen," "Nobody Wins," "Rosemary," "Long Drives," and "Open All Night."

Pick up Painkillers on Amazon. You can also stream it on Spotify.
