Indie rock band Warpaint have released their third studio album, Heads Up, through Rough Trade Records.

Band members on the 11-track LP include Emily Kokal, Jenny Lee Lindberg, Stella Mozgawa, and Theresa Wayman. The album was recorded earlier this year in Los Angeles, and was produced by Jake Bercovici.

The album lends itself to dancing, and there is a dark underbelly that puts this more in line with new wave and gothic rock. Emily talked about the overall sound on Heads Up in an interview with Crack Magazine:

When we walked into making this album, we knew we wanted to play something dancier, faster and fun... A lot of times, people find our live shows to be exciting and our albums to be different – this album has the spirit of our live show.

There are times on the album where the syncopated layers of drums and percussion end up sounding out of sync with the tunes, which makes the grooves overly complicated and takes away from the energy and excitement that's happening with the vocals and guitars — which aren't as loud in the mix as we might selfishly have wanted them to be.

Even with its flaws, the ambitious songwriting and production are overall pretty successful and it's fair to think the songs will sound even better in concert. Our favorite tracks are "New Song," "Whiteout," "By Your Side," "The Stall," "So Good," "Don't Let Go," and "Above Control."

Heads Up is currently available on Amazon. You can also stream the full album above, via Spotify.
