“Dancing In The Street” – Grateful Dead at Cornell University Barton Hall on May 8, 1977 (Martha & The Vandellas Cover) [SoundCloud Audio Single]

Martha & The Vandellas “Dancing In The Street” Lyrics

Hey, comin’ out around the world be ready for a brand new beat
Oh, summer’s here and the time is right, oh, for dancing in the street
Dancing in Chicago (dancing in the street)
Down in New Orleans (dancing in the street)
In New York City (dancing in the street)

All we need is music, sweet music (sweet, sweet music)
They’ll be music everywhere (everywhere)
They’ll be laughing, singing, music swinging and dancing in the street

It doesn’t matter what you wear just as long as you are there
They’re dancing (dancing in the street) oh oh

This is an invitation across the nation the chance for folks to meet
There’ll be swinging, swaying, music playing and dancing in the street

Philadelphia, PA now (dancing in the street)
Baltimore and D.C. (dancing in the street)
Can’t forget them other cities (dancing in the street)

A second single from the Grateful Dead’s legendary May 8, 1977 concert has been shared. Listen to the band perform an uptempo version of Martha & The Vandellas’ 1964 hit “Dancing In The Street” above, via SoundCloud.

At over 16 minutes long, the band lets loose their jam muscles for this performance. The vocals are crisp, Jerry Garcia’s solo midway through is sublime, and the dance beat never lets up.

The song and concert will be part of an 11 CD collection titled Get Shown The Light through Rhino Records. The package will contain four complete shows from the band’s Terrapin Station Tour in May of 1977 (5/5/77, 5/7/77, 5/8/77, and 5/9/77). Pick it up at the Grateful Dead official website.

Last month, the band shared a fiery version of “Morning Dew” from that same legendary 5-8-77 show. Was it the best Grateful Dead performance of all time?
