“Mambo Na’ Mà” – Daymé Arocena [YouTube Audio Single]

Released: December 13th, 2016

Cuban singer Daymé Arocena is a genre-defying artist, as evidenced by “Mambo Na’ Mà,” the leading track off of her second album Cubafonia. Listen above, courtesy of her record label Brownswood Recordings’s YouTube channel.

The song is a thrilling display of the unique flavor that Arocena has been bringing to modern Cuban music since the launch of her debut album Nueva Era in 2015. The tune mixes a variety of genres and rhythms, drawing upon traditional Cuban music, swing, and soul. A number of different horn players improvising simultaneously gives certain sections a sense of controlled chaos, almost reminiscent of Dixieland jazz. Arocena’s unmistakeable voice brings all the disparate elements together as she hums, scats, and repeats the song’s title words “Mambo Na’ Mà” — Spanish for “Nothing But Mambo.”

Arocena shared some insight into her sound in an interview with the Miami News Times:

If you mix jazz with everything, it always works — that’s why I love it. It gives me all the opportunity to create as I feel it… I always try to create as I feel it, even knowing that new song is going to have that jazzy taste inside.

Cubafonia was released this past March, and is available for purchase on Amazon.
