After re-christening himself "Snoop Lion" last year, the artist formerly known as D-O-Double-G has taken on yet another moniker for 7 Days of Funk, his new project with Dâm-Funk. As a tribute to funk great Bootsy Collins, who often called himself Bootzilla, "Snoopzilla" will be the name that graces the credits of 7 Days of Funk's upcoming self-titled debut album.
Today the pair have shared "Faden Away," the first single from their album. With instrumentation that sounds like a significantly sunnier, more retro version Dr. Dre's "The Watcher," the track is Snoop's first foray into G-Funk in at least ten years, if not longer. For Dâm-Funk, "Faden Away" is not too far outside of his usual repertoire of squelchy astro-funk, but Snoop's presence definitely makes 7 Days of Funk his biggest project yet. Listen to the track above, in which Snoop rhymes "Casper the Ghost" with "capture the funk," and channels Zapp with his auto-tuned warbling.
The pair also released a video interview explaining 7 Days of Funk's origin, mission, and inspirations. In it, Snoop explains how he and Dâm-Funk arrived at their current sound: "Instead of it being the P-Funk, we made it the G-Funk. But you can't have 'G' without the 'P.'"
