Snoop Dogg is a man of many talents. Rapper. Hustler. Pimp. In 2013, he tried his hand at Reggae under the name Snoop Lion, and now he's taking it back to old school funk as Snoopzilla with keyboard player / composer Dâm Funk and his band. The group stopped by Conan O'Brien last night and performed "Faden Away" which you can watch above.
The song is a throwback to George Clinton's Parliament, with a groove that Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell could have played on Mothership Connection or One Nation Under A Groove. Unfortunately, the groove gets pretty repetitive and there's no breakdown, lead parts, or change-up to keep things interesting. This leaves Snoop Dogg to rock the mic, which he does well... but this is only good when it could have maybe been great. Talk show performances can be difficult places for bands to get into a groove, due to limitations on time. At the end of the performance, Dâm Funk goes a little wild jumping to the ground as he mashes keys on his keytar. Conan responds by saying "Too much funk," but I'd say the band could have used another 10 minutes or so.
Beyond the music, Snoop also shows off his fancy "Snoopify" app:
