“Motherfuckers never loved us. Remember?”

That might be the strangest hook to a rap song by a popular rapper that I can think of. It’s certainly a far stretch from the first two radio friendly hit songs off his Nothing Was The Same album, “Started From The Bottom” and “Hold On, We’re Going Home

Blatantly taking a verse from Notorious BIG’s “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems” and name-checking Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Drake is taking a page from the New York City hip-hop playbook. The twist is that this video is set in Memphis, and the production on the track is very much in the dirty south / trap style. Toronto’s very own Drake is skilled at bridging gaps, whether they be geographical or stylistic. Love him or hate him, he’s definitely one of the top guys in the rap game right now.

Drake’s father stars in the video. There are also lots of children in the video, which is a little surprising considering the profane language. I’m even a little surprised that this is on YouTube without any warning of explicit language, but I guess “motherfuckers” isn’t considered “R” rated profanity even though it’s one of the Seven Dirty Words. I guess that’s why it’s “Worst Behavior” from Drake.
