2013 has been the year of the Sonic Youth solo project, as Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore, and Kim Gordon all released seperate albums. Last night, Lee Ranaldo and the Dust performed "Lecce, Leaving" from their album Last Night on Earth on Conan O'Brien. Watch above.
The song is a tour de force, drawing on dispirate styles of rock from the post-punk noise rock of Sonic Youth to the melodic alternative sensibilities of a band like R.E.M. to the psychedelic garage jamming of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Bassist Tim Lüntzel shows off his quick fingers and fluid groovability, taking an impressive lead halfway through the song that makes me think of what Berry Oakley used to do with Duane Allman and Dickey Betts in the original Allman Brothers Band. Guitar nerds should definitely dig this video, as Ranaldo rocks his Fender Mustang.
