"Fitzpleasure" - Alt-J on David Letterman 12.17.2013 [YouTube Video]

Alt-J stopped by the Ed Sullivan Theater last night to perform their hit "Fitzpleasure" on The Late Show with David Letterman. Letterman and Paul Shaffer seem quite impressed by the British 4-piece rock group whose debut album, An Awesome Wave, was released in 2012. Over a year later, Alt-J still hasn't put out a second album. Usually when musicians play on television talkshows they have something new to promote, but they don't have any new releases or upcoming tour dates which makes this a little unusual. It's refreshing to see a band perform on TV without needing to hype their brand new product.

Unusual is a good word for Alt-J. Their music has sonic textures and song structures that are different from most other groups around. Even their name, Alt-J, implies an alternative approach to their craft. For many, their studio recordings are too strange to enjoy - especially the vocals. In a live performance context like this, their music is more organic and you can see that they are indeed very skilled at what they do without the studio trickery. "Fitzpleasure" is a dynamic song with interesting changes and infectious pop melodies. Hopefully we'll be getting more new music from this band in 2014.
