Jenny Lewis is an artist who you simply can't put into a box. Best known as a lead vocalist in the bands Rilo Kiley and The Postal Service, she has an incredible voice and she's also exceptionally talented as a guitarist and keyboard player. Stylistically, Lewis can seemingly do it all, from folk to country to rock to electronic. Her latest song, "Completely Not Me," was released earlier this week on YouTube and SoundCloud as the first taste of original music featured on the current season of the HBO series Girls.
"Completely Not Me" was co-written and produced by Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend. The recording has a bouncy pop-folk-rock sound mixed with melancholia that sounds eerily like the 2012 mega hit song "Some Nights" by the band fun. The biggest difference is that "Completely Not Me" is much more bare, with less studio production and the focus around an earthy piano and acoustic guitar that gives the song more of a rootsy vibe. Also, Lewis' vocals have a soft angelic quality that is truly beautiful, quite unique, and definitely not auto-tuned.
Jenny Lewis "Completely Not Me" Lyrics:
I could've died that night
Way back in June
Saw my soul hang heavy above the room
Slackjawed I confessed, bit by my hubris
I was spooked out, obsessed by the moonI was completely not me
But baby I'm coming cleanThe doctor said to you
"Son theres nothing you can do
Just leave her here and wait until the day"
I was shivering in bed, eyes rolled back in my head
I was begging for you to go awayI was completely not me
Baby I'm coming clean
Completely not me
Baby I'm coming cleanOoooo x4
I was completely not me
But baby I'm coming clean
Completely not me
Baby I'm coming cleanI died that night
Way back in June
When my spirit hung heavy above the roomI was completely not me
