Saint Motel are having a blast. Their new video for "My Type", directed by Sam Winkler, features lead singer AJ Jackson digitally inserted into an outrageously over-the-top vintage clip from a 1970s Italian disco. The result is both hilariously campy and oddly earnest, deftly walking the line between retro-irony and the New Sincerity.
The single itself, which dropped last July, is an propulsive ball of energy, harkening back to a time when carefree decadence could somehow seem overwhelmingly innocent. Yet it's the video that really brings the package together: The horns are hot, the vocals are cool, and the back-up dancers are choreographed as balls. This right here is entertainment at its finest.
(Fun Fact: The old-school clip in question actually comes from the video for Adriano Celentano's 1973 hit, "Prisencolinensinainciusol," a song sung entirely in gibberish meant to sound like American English. While this slapdash made-up language isn't quite as affecting as, say, Hopelandic, the end product is satisfying nonetheless.)
