After two similarly-titled mixtapes, permanently auto-tuned R&B singer Ty Dolla $ign is releasing his commercial debut, the Beach House EP, today. Stream it above, via Spotify.

Featuring big names as well as rising stars, Beach House shows just how much Ty Dolla $ign's fingers are on the pulse of contemporary hip hop and R&B. The EP's production, mostly handled by DJ Mustard, sounds fresh and distinctly West Coast, save for Young Chop and Fredo Santana's Chicago banger "Familiar."

Lyrically and thematically, Dolla $ign isn't out to change the game. He's always come across as sex-crazed, and elements of this EP, like a description of a woman's breasts as "silicone-y" on the "Paranoid" remix, or a beat featuring squeaky bed springs on "Or Nah" do little to evolve his persona. What is remarkable about Beach House though, is how damn baroque it is. Arrangements are tight and interesting, string, horn and piano flourishes are gratuitously doled out, and transitions between songs are smooth as hell. Not since The-Dream's Love Vs. Money has hypersexual R&B been treated with such delicacy and care (Dolla $ign might even nod to that album with his line, "I used to love these hoes, but now I love this money" on "Work"). Ty Dolla $ign really surprised me with this one, and even if he's not your cup of tea, you have to admire the composition that went into this EP.

The Beach House EP is available for purchase on iTunes.
