Deltron 3030 appeared on Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot's Sound Opinions this week. Comprised of Del the Funky Homosapien, Kid Koala, and Dan the Automator, Deltron 3030 recently released Event II, the long awaited sequel to 2000's self-titled album.

After briefly discussing the recent death of Devo's Bob Casale, the interview begins. At 3:52, the hosts play the Joseph Gordon-Levitt album intro before asking Del about his Sci-Fi and anime inspirations. Del says his alter ego stemmed from the desire to combine rapping with ideas and terminology from futuristic fiction.

Dan the Automator and Kid Koala chat about their previous work, before interview goes on to discuss the formation of the group and they reluctantly accept the use of the term "supergroup." When asked what kept them going after such a long delay between albums, Del responds, "To tell you the truth, really, the fans is what made me stick to it. Because the way they were reacting to the first one, made me want to make a proper one."

One of the most insightful bits of the interview is when Dan explains how the record changed over the last decade. He says their previous record was a "futuristic romp," whereas Event II took a deeper look at the world. "Sci-Fi, in so many ways, is pretty much based around exploring the present through the future."

They play "The Return" at 12:30, which Dan says "reintroduces people to the world." The track takes place 10 years after the previous record and their live performance shines. The song -- like the album itself -- is a long, epic story of the dystopian future, with space age breakdowns and Del's silky-smooth lyrics.

"I had to study, basically, science fiction writing," Del said about his lyrical ambitions for the album. The three continue talking about their musical process, their creative collaboration, and the evolution of the songs. When asked about the live orchestra on their tour dates, Del brought up a point made in David Byrne's recent book. "It was the performance first. Dan wants the performance to be exactly what was in his head," Del says before breaking into "Nobody Can," a chilled out jam with a funky guitar leading the beat.

The hosts ask about other projects and collaborations, including Dr. Octagon and their mutual involvement in Gorillaz. They go on about their scope, use of multi-media in other projects, and the fact that Dan doesn't want to be labeled. Before playing "City Rising From The Ashes," they settle on the fact that their discographies still sound fresh. "I can live with the fact that my records don't sound old," Dan says.

After the interview, Jim and Greg go on to chat about Beck's first album in 6 years, Morning Phase, which you can stream here at Zumic as well.
