Harry Connick Jr. has sold over 28 million albums worldwide, with an old school brand of vocal pop and swingin' jazz. The New Orleans native just finished his 4th stint as guest judge for Fox's American Idol this week, and he performed a couple songs as a medley backed by a big band which you can watch above via YouTube.
"One Fine Thing" is from Connick Jr.'s 2013 album Every Man Should Know. The upright bass, electric guitar, and sparse drums instantly create a feeling of intimacy, as strings and flute come in through the song to push things even further. When the strings come in, you can hear the females in the crowd get excited. I had to look up if Connick Jr. had a nickname, and apparently they call him "The Vice-Chairman of the Board," because of his similarity to Frank Sinatra. Makes sense.
After that first song, which lasts only about 2 minutes, Connick moves over to piano to play "Come By Me" from his 1999 album of the same name. His New Orleans roots show, as he sings and plays stride piano in the style of guys like Professor Longhair. The band comes in, and the horn section makes their presence known with a rousing finale featuring a slide trombone to bring the performance home.
