Vampire Weekend stopped by The Tonight Show last night to perform Modern Vampires of the City highlight "Unbelievers." The band played in front of a curtain where images of New York were being projected in gorgeous black and white. The band seemed to be celebrating the Big Apple with Fallon, who brought The Tonight Show back to 30 Rockefeller Plaza after being filmed in Los Angeles for 42 years.
Like most track from Modern Vampires, "Unbelievers" is quite different than Vampire Weekend's previous work. While their older material might sound like background music to a quirky Wes Anderson production, "Unbelievers" is a gospel influenced track with multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij playing an organ. "We know the fire awaits unbelievers, all of the sinners the same" frontman Ezra Koenig sings. They might be a band named after blood thirsty demons with songs about Hell, but "Unbelievers" is so quiet and pleasant that it sounds like it can be performed at a library without being shushed by a librarian.
