Recent TDE signee SZA has shared a new track that will appear on her upcoming EP, Z, slated for release on April 8th. "Childs Play" features Chance The Rapper and was produced by XXYYXX. Stream it above and scroll down for the lyrics.
Awesome in ways that only a song that begins with the words "Ripping the head off all my Barbie dolls" could be, "Childs Play" is more immediately pleasing than "Babylon," the only other track we've heard thus far from Z. It's irregularly structured, with SZA seeming to break into a chorus at the 0:58 mark, only to never repeat those words again, and the song giving way to a verse by Chance midway through her second verse. The pair unite to sing the last stanza of lyrics together, their voices overlapping in a charmingly imperfect manner.
XXYYXX's beat is lush, chill and perfectly suited to SZA's preexisting predilection for, as Chance puts it in this song, "the tardiest of tempos" (AKA slow songs). "Childs Play" is a perfect example of how three seemingly unrelated artists can join forces to produce something that feels organic, creative and not the least bit forced.
Stay tuned for Z, and in the meantime, catch up with SZA, Chance The Rapper and XXYYXX's music, videos and news on their respective Zumic artist pages.
