Janelle Monáe has covered David Bowie's classic "Heroes" as part of a soccer-themed ad campaign with Pepsi that will be released in conjunction with the 2014 World Cup in Rio De Janiero. Monáe's version is drastically different from the original, with a more electronic polish and a thumping bass. It's almost unrecognizable as a cover until she gets to the chorus. The dance-electronic vibe feels like it would fit in seamlessly on her current album, The Electric Lady.
As for Bowie's approval on the cover, Monáe tells Rolling Stone "Bowie knows what’s up. He’s a fan and I’m a fan of him. The respect is mutual. I hear from his wife Iman that he’s a huge supporter of me, the way I dress and my music. I just hope that we made him proud."
