Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be releasing their 13th studio album, Hypnotic Eye, on July 29th. To give fans a taste of what the album will sound like, the band has released the first track, titled "American Dream Plan B." You can listen to it above.
The three minute song starts off with stop and go guitar riffs, similar to the style of AC/DC. Petty's nasally vocals have a "don't mess with me" edge to them that is supported with a steady drumbeat. Acoustic strumming preludes a kickass guitar solo that screams rock and roll. It's a short song that carries a lot of swagger with it and shows that Petty still knows how to write a great tune.
"American Dream Plan B" is representative of the style of music that Hypnotic Eye will be. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Tom Petty said, "I knew I wanted to do a rock & roll record. We hadn't made a straight hard-rockin' record, from beginning to end, in a long time." When he brought the song to the rest of the band, there was silence. "I said, 'Listen, I think we have something here, but we're going to have to get excited about it,'" commented Petty.
Tom Petty will be hitting the road with The Heartbreakers and special guest Steve Winwood on a nation wide tour beginning in August.
