The Weeknd released "Often" last night, a sex-driven song that is his first original solo output of 2014. Recently, he's released great reworkings of "Drunk in Love" and "Or Nah," but it is refreshing to hear the singer's talented voice over an original backdrop.
Just like in the previous two releases, The Weeknd is singing to a potential lover about what he is going to do to her. There is an overlooked creativity in his lyrics. His subject matter almost always revolves around sex, drugs, and money, and that makes it all the more impressive that he finds originality in topics that have been overdone to the point of cliché.
In the first verse, The Weeknd sings, "My god white, he in my pocket / He get me redder than the devil 'til I go nauseous." Here, instead of just glamorizing doing drugs like countless artists have done, The Weeknd is being honest about it. In the former line he candidly admits that cocaine is the epicenter of his life, and in the latter one he lists two negative side-effects.
The impressive sample-based beat was produced Ben Billionz. It is unclear if "Often" will appear on an upcoming album or mixtape, but for now we get it as a free download. Hopefully this release is a sign of things to come, and The Weeknd will begin to release his music more often in the second half of the year.
