Prolific singer/songwriter Jason Molina died on Saturday due to organ failure from years of alcohol abuse. Molina, who was much beloved in the underground music scene for his heart-wrenching records released under the monikers Magnolia Electric Company, Songs: Ohia and his given name, recently addressed his health problems with a post on Magnolia Electric Co.'s site, saying:
“Treatment is good, getting to deal with a lot of things that even the music didn’t want to. I have not given up because you, my friends have not given up on me. I do still need your support however that takes shape, good vibes are worth more than you might think.”
That statement now reads as tragic as one of Molina's beautiful songs, which for all their sadness often contained a glimpse of hope that things could get better. Molina had not released a record since 2009's Autumn Bird Songs, largely due to his health problems, but was said to be working on music again.
Here's to hoping Jason finally found some peace, he was 39 years old.
