Iconic country singer George Jones died at 81 today, Friday, April 26th, at a Nashville hospital. He is known for such hit songs as "White Lightning," "He Stopped Loving Her Today," and "She Thinks I Still Care."

Jones was one of the most admired and imitated country musicians of the last 50 years. Known for songs about heartache and drunk desolation, George Jones was sincerely what many country musicians have aspired to be. In spite of countless ups and downs since his first hit in 1955, Jones continued to sing honest, mournful tunes throughout his career, and became one of the most respected country musicians of all time.

According to the New York Times: “Not everybody needs to sound like a George Jones record,” Alan Jackson, once told an interviewer. “But that’s what I’ve always done, and I’m going to keep it that way — or try to.”

Jones was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

Rest in peace, George.
