According to Wikipedia, the definition of blitzkrieg is as follows: a series of quick and decisive short battles to deliver a knockout blow to an enemy state before it could fully mobilize.

On Saturday night, legendary Ramones drummer Marky Ramone and professional party animal Andrew W.K. on lead vocals slaughtered an Irving Plaza crowd with an hour and a half set of classic Ramones songs. From the opening song of "Rockaway Beach" to the final song of "Blitzkrieg Bop" hardly a break or pause was taken as the band (featuring Mark Neuman from Sheer Terror on guitar) kept the energy of the show at a maximum level. It only took about 3 songs until the crowd surfing began. Fans varied in age; some had seen the Ramones with Joey Ramone live in their heyday, and some had only heard the classic recordings. No matter the case, everyone sang along to their favorite songs, whether it was "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," "Beat On The Brat," or "I Wanna Be Sedated."

Marky Ramone's drumbeat was the energy that fueled Andrew W.K. throughout the show. Filling Joey Ramone's converse shoes is a nearly impossible task, but if there is a suitable candidate for the position, Andrew W.K. would be it. In each song he showed great stage presence; pumping his arms, pointing the mic to the crowd, and headbanging to the beat as beads of sweat flew from his hair. His vocal delivery and charisma on stage didn't skip a beat all night.

The band did not disappoint with the amount of Ramones songs they performed or the endless energy they put into each one. Coming out for two encores was generous of them, but what was extra special were the two non-Ramones songs they covered: Motorhead's "R.A.M.O.N.E.S." and a punk version of Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World." For the last song of the night, Andrew W.K. insisted that the crowd form a circle pit and instantly the floor transformed into a giant revolving circle of sweaty bodies bopping to the "Blitzkrieg Bop."

By no means did this feel like a tribute show or just a bunch of musicians covering Ramones songs. The intimacy of the venue, the passion of the fans who attended, and having an original member of The Ramones still performing made it feel like an authentic Ramones concert. On this night many people left the show having their Ramones fix quenched. I know I did.

Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg will be on tour until the end of the month. You can check out the remaining dates at Marky Ramone's tour page.
