Last year, while digging through his late parents' archives, John Carter Cash discovered previously the unreleased recordings from Out Among The Stars, a Johnny Cash album recorded for Columbia records in 1981 and 1984. The record wasn't released before Cash was dropped from the label, but it will finally see the light of day March 25th, 2014.

John Carter Cash told the AP:

"We were so excited when we discovered this. We were like, my goodness this is a beautiful record that nobody has ever heard. Johnny Cash is in the very prime of his voice for his lifetime. He's pitch perfect. It's seldom where there's more than one vocal take. They're a live take and they're perfect."

The record, helmed by producer Billy Sherrill, was recorded in the "countrypolitan" era of Nashville, a far cry from Cash's outlaw style, which perhaps explains why the album was scrapped. Says Carter Cash:

"Dad was always uniquely himself. And later on the world would come back around. He never modified himself. But Nashville at the time was in a completely different place. It was the 'Urban Cowboy' phase. It was pop country, and dad was not that. I think him working with Billy was sort of an effort by the record company to put him more in the circle of Music Row and see what could happen at the heart of that machine."

More than 30 years later, fans will have the chance to hear the results of the recordings, updated and bolstered by Marty Stuart (who played on the original sessions), Buddy Miller and Jerry Douglas. Check out the full tracklist and description below.

Description from the Johnny Cash official website:

The tracks on Out Among The Stars were originally recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at Columbia Studios in 1981 and 1111 Sound Studios in 1984 and produced by Billy Sherrill, the architect of the "countrypolitan" sound who was heading A&R at CBS Records Nashville at the time.
On these songs—which include duets with June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings—Johnny worked with an expanded ensemble featuring a young Marty Stuart on guitar and mandolin and Nashville A-Team members Jerry Kennedy (guitar), Pete Drake (steel guitar), Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano) and Henry Strzelecki (bass).
