Kelis Dishes on Her Culinary Skills and "Food" on WNYC Soundcheck Podcast

Two time Grammy nominee Kelis had a chat with WNYC interviewer Dan Pashman about her, her new album, Food, and food itself.

The nearly 25 minute podcast contained an interview between creator and host of "The Sporkful Podcast" Pashman with Kelis and three songs off of Kelis' new album.

Kelis and her four person band kicked off the podcast with a live band performance of her song "Friday Fish Fry." Her raspy, soulful voice was complimented by the piano, backup vocals, trumpets and drums.

The Harlem native explained that when she's cooking she's in a different mental place and has an attitude when she is interrupted. "...people wanted to come into the kitchen and talk to me, which I find absolutely the most irritating thing in the world. I don't want to talk to you! I'm like, "Don't talk to me. I'm busy!"" she said.

When asked about her culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu, she stated that she needed a break from music. Pashman asked if any of her classmates knew who she was and if anyone made any lame milkshake jokes. She jokingly responded that on the first day of school it was nerve wracking and that she worried about if she would make any friends. Luckily for her, the horrible uniforms made it "very grounding."

Regarding her combination of culinary and musical talent, Pashman noted that he saw her on her cooking show Saucy & Sweet making shrimp fricassee with strawberries and that she "chastised" her assistant for not slicing the strawberries the right way. He observed that she was very precise in what she wanted and he asked if her vision for music was the same? Kelis replied that people do see her as a free spirit on the outside, but she is very clear in her ideas. "I can't predict the outcome, but I know what it takes to make it." She further stated that she has been classically trained with music and food and wants to do things the right way. "That's my foundation, from that I can go buck wild... I can do this my way," she said.

She also reflected on a recent fan's question on Reddit's "Ask Me Anything." The fan wanted to know what kitchen utensil she can mostly identify her self as and she stated that she was a cast iron skillet. Kelis described herself as "...serious business, heavy, hot and get's better with age."
