Just yesterday, rapper Astro turned 18 years old. Amazing to think he's still so young, having gotten national attention on the first season of The X Factor on television 3 years ago. Coinciding with his birthday, Astro dropped a music video for "88” which you can watch above, via YouTube.
Sampling Rene & Angela's hit "I'll Be Good" from 1985 as well as Nas' "Made You Look" from 2002, Astro take us on a trip through classic NYC hip hop with production from Sammy J and video direction from Dan Centrino. The video captures the New York City street vibe without much flash. Astro shows talent well beyond his years as he goes into a Caribbean flow toward the end of the tune. Plus, lyrics like "I bodybag MCs from Queens to Belize" and "Life's a beach / I'm just tannin'" show an ability to land punchlines with impact and clarity that syncs perfectly with the production.
Stay tuned for Astro's next album, Computer Era, due out in October 2014 on Grade A Tribe Records. For Astro's latest music, news, and tour dates, check out his Zumic artist page.
