Instrumental duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have been proving themselves to be acoustic guitar masters for a little over ten years, and 9 Dead Alive, their fifth album, is another testament to their skills. Above, stream the album ahead of its April 29th release date, courtesy of NPR.
With its music composed solely of two acoustic guitars and a pair of brief dialog samples, 9 Dead Alive relies on sheer musicianship to hold the attention of listeners. Rodrigo y Gabriela compose music that takes the shredding aspect of heavy metal and applies it to the sound, structure and format of centuries-old Spanish flamenco music, with the product being wholly unique and almost certainly inimitable. If you're a guitarist, this album may cause you an eargasm or two.
Though the album is instrumental, Rodrigo y Gabriela tweeted about what inspired the writing of the album:
Each track is a personal celebration of individuals who have passed on, but through their deeds and words still resonate in the 21st century
