Incisive rapper Mick Jenkins has released a new single titled "A Layover," which features fellow Chicagoan greenSLLIME and experimental production syndicate THEMPeople. Check out the song above, via Jenkins' Bandcamp.
Amidst a bleary landscape of muffled lo-fi tones and chalky drums, which lag leisurely behind the resonant vocals, Jenkins delivers a poetic and gritty performance. The lyrics touch briefly on several different topics, including impromptu drug use on the road and misconceptions regarding wealth, race, and occupation. Jenkins raps "5 flights this week, I do this motherfucka, First class, got 'em looking like, "Who this motherfucka?" / I lightly say drummer before rapper, I like to say writer before both, They won't give me my respect."
"A Layover" follows Jenkins' recent collaboration with emerging emcee GoldLink, titled "Pressed for time (Crossed My Mind),"
