John MacLean, aka The Juan MacLean, has released a music video for "A Place Called Space" featuring LCD Soundsystem member Nancy Whang contributing vocals. Watch above, via DFA Records' YouTube channel.
The psychedelic video done by Tyler Brodie and Andrew Adair features three-dimensional digital graphics, with colors and shapes that change constantly in different pulsating configurations of eye candy. Musically, the song combines elements of Pink Floyd, Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk, Golden Earring, and Daft Punk. The rhythmic foundation is computerized disco, but wailing guitars and cool effects keep things interesting over the 8+ minutes.
The vocal melody seemingly combines the choruses from a couple of classic '80s hits: "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell and "Say, Say, Say" by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. The beauty of the track is that while it's clearly drawing from the past, it also sounds completely fresh and futuristic. It's danceable, but it's also perfect for driving down the highway or just chillin'.
