Before Sia recorded the song, it almost became a single for Rihanna and then Adele. NME reports that, in an interview with Zane Lowe's World Record on Apple Music's Beats 1, Rihanna was originally offered the song. "I wrote this one song and gave it to Rihanna and I had seller's remorse because I was attached to it, I regretted it," she said, "Then she gave it back to me and I was relieved."

In the same interview, Sia claims that the song also has roots in the recording sessions for Adele's upcoming third album. "Adele heard it and asked if she could have it. I thought 'Do I like it, or do I like a million dollars? She cut it and it was so amazing. I'm a huge fan of her voice." Adele has a co-writing credit on "Alive," along with Sia and singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr.

Directed by Sia and Daniel Askill, the music video features a 9-year-old Japanese girl named Mahiro Takano. Alone, she goes through routine of very skillful and highly technical karate moves otherwise known as a kata.

This is Acting is scheduled to arrive on January 29, 2016. Pick up the MP3 for "Alive" on Amazon. Purchase This Is Acting on Amazon as well.
