Earlier this month, Halsey released a music video for the remix of "Alone," featuring rappers Big Sean and Stefflon Don. Watch above.
The song is originally from her second album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, which tells the narrative of Luna and Solis, fictional characters created by Halsey. The two characters represent her and her ex-lover, and she explained in a Vevo interview that she wanted her fans to "feel the intensity and the pain that I was going through when I was going through my breakup." Halsey felt like she was at a low point in her life while making the album, as she juggled work, fame, identity, and a broken heart. "I lost myself," she confessed, "and it was because I was giving myself to a lot of people... I was never alone."
This "Alone" music video follows Luna's character as she mourns the end of her relationship with Solis. Rocking a diamond-studded bodysuit, Luna makes her way through a lavish ballroom with beautiful people and dazzling costumes. Although she is surrounded by partygoers, she sings of feeling alone as she searches for her lost lover. The story and setting allude to the masquerade ball from the classic story of Romeo and Juliet, but a post-modern take on it. "My record concept and all my videos have referenced Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet," Halsey tweeted before releasing the video, "neon crosses and church motifs included."
