Fifteen years ago, Illinois-based emo band American Football released their only full length, entitled American Football. On May 20th, the band will release a deluxe edition of that album with the original nine tracks, along with 10 additional demos and live recordings.

The deluxe version came together when guitarist Steve Holmes found a set of old cassette tapes and live recordings from the band's early days. The live recordings come from a show they played at the Blind Pig in Champaign, Illinois and include a song from their self-titled EP from 1998 and an unreleased track called "The 7's," which was actually the first song the band recorded together when they formed in 1997. The live tracks are all instrumental, but contain the mathy, varied song structure that they featured predominantly on the full length.

The other bonus tracks on the album consist of four instrumental boombox practice session tracks. The first features the use of a trumpet, which is apt, as the parenthetical name is "The One With The Trumpet," a theme name that they used on this album on the instrumental final track "The One With The Wulitzer." The album is certainly catered toward American Football fans, giving them a chance to hear the album in production and a chance to hear early, rare tracks that were previously never released.

Of course, the album also includes the original nine tracks. Which feature Mike Kinsella's quiet, understated yet emotive vocals, that manage to tap into and connect to the feelings of the listener. The lyrics are relatable and the instrumentation influenced a whole movement of bands in the up and coming third wave of emo.

The double LP is pressed in yellow / green vinyl and red vinyl and includes new photographs of the band, lyrics and liner notes written by the band themselves. The yellow/green vinyl pressings sold out during pre-order, but the red vinyl pressings and the double CD and cassettes are still available. Three NYC tour dates at Webster Hall in October sold out immediately, and the band just recently announced they were playing the Pygmalion Festival in their hometown of Champaigh/Urbana Illinois.

American Football (Deluxe Edition) is available for pre-order on CD, vinyl and cassette through the Polyvinyl Records website.
