Alternative rock band Everclear have shared a second track from their upcoming ninth studio album titled Black Is the New Black. Listen to "American Monster" above via YouTube.
The ominous drum beat that opens the song foretells the aggression that's about to come. Heavily distorted guitar chords set the backdrop for singer Art Alexakis' dark and personal lyrics. Since the early '90s, Everclear have always had a skill for writing catchy songs, and "American Monster" explores the deeper, angrier side of the band.
Singer / guitarist and band co-founder Art Alexakis spoke to Guitar World about the upcoming album:
This is not an upbeat Everclear record. It’s pretty dark, lyrically and musically. When I would sit down with the guitar and start coming up with ideas, it was pushing toward a darker place. Which is kind of bizarre because right now things are really good! I feel safe enough to go to the dark places. And trust me, there's plenty of dark places in me. I've never had a shortage of that.
