David Lynch has released a "super deluxe edition" of his wonderfully twisted and surreal sophomore album, 2013's The Big Dream. In addition to remixes and instrumentals, the deluxe set gives fans a pair of brand new tracks, including this relentlessly ominous mystic dirge we have before us.
"And Light Shines" offers a pulsating, mechanical backdrop for the auteur's prophetic poetry, seeming to convey hints of transcendence only through total ego-annihilation. The instrumentals are, of course, prototypically "Lynchian," albeit in a way that's far more Inland Empire than Blue Velvet. Although a thin layer of 1950s doo-wop innocence remains, these fragments are overwhelming filtered through a lens of digital deconstruction and menacing post-industrial hyperreality. Basically, the future is here, and it's fucking dark.
Enjoy.
