When it was announced that André Benjamin (also known as André 3000, as one half of the Atlanta hip-hop group Outkast) would be playing the role of Jimi Hendrix in a new biopic called All Is By My Side, a lot of eyebrows were raised. The film is an unauthorized portrayal of Hendrix, receiving no support from the late guitar player's family.

Watching the clip above, it appears that André 3K has turned in an exceptional performance. He's nailed the voice of Hendrix, and his sheepish mannerisms. He doesn't look much like Hendrix, which is often an issue with these types of films about famous people. Actress Imogen Poots also puts in a fine performance as Linda Keith, Hendrix's girlfriend and one-time girlfriend of The Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards. The film is set to make it's official premiere in the United States on March 12 at SXSW in Austin, Texas. It's previously played at the Toronto Film Festival.

André 3000 has previously appeared as an actor most notably in the 2006 film Idlewild. More recently, he's played cameo roles on television's The Shield and About A Girl, as well as the Will Ferrell movie Semi-Pro. This summer, he's scheduled to play 40 festival dates with Outkast.
